If you’re anything like me and famous flag suit guy Lee Greenwood, then you’re proud to be an American, and you’ve already completed or are planning to soon complete your Census 2010 form, which will provide the federal government with vital information they will use to fritter away your tax dollars on earmarks and vanity projects in an even more efficient manner. Good job! As a matter of fact, I plopped mine in the mailbox Tuesday night and I’ll tell you, it got me thinking. In the time since the United States mandated a complete population census in 1789, nearly every state on earth has adopted the system, making it a near necessity of nationhood.

Why then doesn’t Jets Nation have its own census? How else will we know how many fans we’ve got, how long they’ve stuck with the team and whether that talk of a New Jersey/Long Island split between Jets and Giants fans is true? I’ll bet you Red Sox Nation’s had one of these things for years, and Raider Nation probably would have too, if any of their fans were literate. So please take the time to fill out at least part of the poll questions provided below. There’s a real possibility that the data we collect from this project could provide a very unexpected snapshot of our fan base.

Thanks for the tip! This might make me sound like a n00b, but I had actually never heard of Jets Confidential before. A quick Google search has remedied this.

In think this Census of Jets fans is a great idea. However, one suggestion would be to try and develop as many other venues as possible to reach Jets fans around the country (i.e., Jets Confidential, other Jets fan websites and blogs). Good luck.

Good idea. But only one days time to get this thing done? I don't know how many have replied, but it would seem that you are going to get a pretty small cross section here.

We've recieved about 500 responses so far. This is a relatively new site that doesn't land much regular traffic, so that amount far exceeds any expectations I could ever have possibly had. While that likely wouldn't cut it for a professional study, I think 500 completed forms ought to be enough for our purposes. Besides, with most of the responders coming by way of The Jets Blog, a statistician would presumably label this a biased survey anyway.

But I'll leave the thing open permanently and continue to promote it/monitor new responses, so feel free to tell your friends about this!
