Fanbytes #3: The Game Ball

For months I’ve been asking readers to send me personal stories of Jets fandom, from the comedic to the tragic and everything in between. I left the door open for creative essays, photojournalism and even freaking poetry, and not one of you schmucks could be bothered to submit anything. Oh sure, the first two installments of Fanbytes were great, way back in, like, April, but now it’s July and this blog is about ready to switch into full-on regular season mode. I need stories! Even David from Gang Green Nation has been hounding y’all about this for the past two days and still nothing!

Thanks then to a Twitter friend who tweets by the name of @GONYJETS for taking the time to share a remarkable experience that took place only a year ago. I know a lot of you are down on Kerry Rhodes, and, in many ways, that’s deserved. Yesterday, Kris Jenkins not so subtly inferred that he is a woman. I myself have called him a “cockstain” on numerous instances. But I think after reading our friend’s story, you’ll see that there’s a legitimately good person beneath all that soft play. Fanbyte #2: Back in the Day at Shea

I’ve got to say that I’m a little disappointed. I thought for sure that at least a couple fine readers out there would be willing to submit a personal Jets memory for inclusion in our Fanbytes series. I guess you guys just don’t have any cool stories to share. I’m sorry to hear that. If you do happen to have a change of heart, however, and decide you would like to have that neat anecdote about the time you and Freeman McNeil went bowling published online, go ahead and send them to me at max@jetskvetch.com. Your submission doesn’t have to be limited to just text, either. We’ll also accept photos, video and whatever other weird crap you might have to share. You can even mail it to me if you’d prefer. All of which is to say, please send stuff in and help keep this feature afloat. This is something no other Jets blog does regularly, and I’d like to make it a key part of the Jets Kvetch for a long time to come.

Today’s Fanbyte comes to us from “Charley” as a response to the Jets Census that we ran a couple weeks ago. Having seen the extent to which our online readership skews toward the younger demographic, Charley, a lifelong Jets fan, decided to impart upon this whippersnapper some lessons of the olden days. Dawn of Fanbytes: Vintage Sanchez

Because we here at the Jets Kvetch understand that sports are nothing without the fevered committment of you, the fan, we have decided to open up our site to you, still the fan. From today onward, I’ll be reguarly posting a series called Fanbytes, the aim of which is to publish your favorite Jets stories, memories and annecdotes. We’ll take anything, so long as it’s genuine, interesting and speaks to your Jets love! So if you’ve got a story, poem, photo essay, comic book, stop-m0tion animation film or glitter macaroni art project that you’d like to share, please mail it in to max@jetskvetch.com! I will promise you right now that all stories submitted to me will be posted to the site, and we will refer to you only by your first name, so no privacy worries here. For as much as we talk about those Same Old Jets, there really has never been a Same Old Fan. From the elders among us to the fresh-faced kids just getting into the game; from the gritty New Yorker who never misses a game, to those bold fans scattered across the globe, all of you are worth hearing from. So what are you waiting for?? Send that stuff in!
